About Ecological Engineering and IÖV

Ecological Engineering deals with the systematic and long-term oriented design, construction and implementation, operation and management of ecosystems. These is not so much about natural ecosystems, but mainly about ecosystems, which are greatly influenced or inhabited by humans, i.e. technical-cultural ecosystems. Ecological Engineering is a synthesis of the practical approach of engineers, architects and planners and the holistic mindset of ecology and systems theory. This encompasses holistic methodology, cycles of materials with minimal losses, little technical energy, effectiv use of energy, materials and resources, multifunctionality, decentralized and redundant structures etc. The object here are ecosystems at various levels of scale (object, local, regional).

A holistic information- and quality management is one of the key-points for the ecosystems ecological engineers deal with, where men and men´s technical-cultural subsystems are essential parts of the whole. Without this taken into consideration the long-term functioning of the system and sensefullness of it´s engineering will not be possible. That´s why in research, design, construction and operation a holistic and encompassing information- and quality management is applied by ecological engineers.

The Ecological Engineering Society is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, a network of responsible experts and companies, who deal with best practice for the design, construction, operation and research of technical-cultural ecosystems.

The IÖV represents the theme of Ecological Engineering, supports it´s members in the realization of projects, performs research & development projects of it´s own, publishes guidelines and standards, and helps spreading the respective knowledge by the help of workshops, conferences, publications etc. The IÖV was founded 1993, its headoffice being in Augsburg, with a branch in Suzhou, China, since 2008.
